Caring for Roses with Properly Balanced Soil Conditions

If you’re getting ready to plant a rose bush, you should prepare your soil to near ideal conditions. One of the things you want to achieve is a perfect mixture of sand, silt, and clay, which would be 40 percent sand, 40 percent silt, and 20 percent clay. There are several tests available that you use to tell whether the soil has a good composition. Some experienced gardeners will compress the soil in their hand. If it doesn’t maintain its lump type shape and crumbles without any outside force, the sand ratio is probably a little too high. If you push the compressed lump with your finger and it doesn’t fall apart easily, your soil may contain too much clay.

If you’re still uncertain about the content of your soil, you can separate each ingredient by using this very simple method. Add a cup or two of the dirt into a clear jar of water. Shake the jar until the soil is suspended in the water and let it set until you see it separate into 3 separate layers. The top layer is clay, the next is silt, and on the bottom is sand. From this test, you should be able to determine the presence of each component within your dirt, and act accordingly.

After you’ve completed the test and analyzed the content of your soil, if you decide that it is low on a certain ingredient, you should do something to correct the imbalance. If your soil has too much silt or sand, you can add some peat moss or compost. If your soil has too much clay, you can add a mixture of peat moss and sand. The peat moss, when moistened, helps the added ingredient to infiltrate the mixture better.

How is the water content of the soil? This is another important thing to consider when preparing for your rose or flower garden area. If the location for you garden is at the bottom portion of an incline, it’s most likely to absorb too much water which may drown out your plants. To eliminate this problem, you should consider elevating your garden a few inches above the rest of the ground. Doing this simple step may allow for more drainage and less saturation into the soil.

Adding nutrients to your soil is a very necessary part of the process. One or two weeks prior to planting, you should add a generous amount of fertilizer to your soil. Mix it in really well and let it set for a while, allowing the nutrients to saturate the soil as it should. Once you have done this, your soil should be ready to grow healthy, beautiful roses.

Once they’re planted, you still want to pay attention to the soil. The first few weeks, the roots are using up all the nutrients around them fairly quickly. About a week after planting, you should add a smaller amount of fertilizer than you added before. After this you should continue to monitor the soil condition. You may use more fertilizer, but not as mush or as often. For new plants, if you add a tiny bit every couple of weeks, that should be plenty to keep your roses thriving.

Actually, the process of monitoring and condition the soil can be reduce to just a few steps.

These steps are:

  1. Ensure you’re satisfied that the composition of the soil is properly balanced.
  2. Prepare the area properly so that it has the proper drainage.
  3. Add the proper amount of fertilizer during the planting and a few times after planting.
  4. Add a small amount of fertilizer after planting to ensure strong growth.

Following these simple steps, will help your roses grow to meet your expectations. These are a few of the many things one learns as they become for experienced in growing and caring for roses. Enjoy growing and appreciating them for as long as you’re able.
